One of the most interesting concepts I learned in Holistic Nutrition School was the difference between Primary and Secondary foods. When I first heard the question “What do you think are our primary and secondary foods?”, I immediately thought- well… proteins, and carbohydrates and vitamins and minerals etc, but when the teacher explained what they are I was completely amazed and my life changed forever.

Nutrition is a secondary source of energy. Primary foods, or non-food sources of nourishment, are what really fuel us.

Primary food goes beyond the plate, nurturing us on a deeper level. The four main primary foods are:

  • career
  • relationships
  • physical activity
  • spirituality

These are non-food sources that feed us daily. Even if you eat all organic, raw, vegan the best of the best foods and you are lacking nourishment from any of these sources you will probably not feel at peace or happy, and you might find that there is something missing in your life.

Ask yourself these questions:

Do I love what you do and do what I love? Career wise. Why or why not?

Do I cultivate loving relationships? With family, friends and lovers? Why or why not?

Do I give my body the exercise it needs? Why or why not?

Do I feel a spiritual connection? With my self, earth, universe, God, and/or Spirit? Why or why not?

The more primary food we give ourselves, the less we depend on secondary food. On the contrary, the more we fill ourselves with secondary food, the less space we leave for primary food – our true source of nourishment.

Many religions and cultures practice fasting to reduce secondary food, opening channels to receive a greater amount of primary food.

Take some quality time to explore your personal balance between primary food and secondary food – which area could use some attention.
